At the same time, the complete privatization of li- quor stores might lift a nearly $100 million burden from the taxpayer. So far: Hear, hear! The blue- eyed mullahs. But let us never forget that booze 1S a drug. An in- credibly powerful drug. It takes generations upon generations for a race to develop working tolerance for the stuff, if they ever do. Usually, they just become degenerate. You start talking about a witch's brew like tequila, for instance, and you’re talking about a chemical distilled from a desert cactus. Don Juan would approve! Ottawa, of course, has launched a new era of tough drinking and driving legisla- tion to scare drunk drivers off the roads -- one of the few commendable moves made in Our unctuous little capital in a long time. But then, so does skiing. The freedom to waste away is freedom itself, n’est ce pas? Your attitude toward booze depends on if you have any faith left in human nature or not. Or do you tend toward oligarchical totalitarianism, like most bureaucrats? Booze is.a health problem, like cancer. Conceded. Yet there’s another way to view the issue: Maybe only half as many people would get killed by cars, but a lot of them would be slaughtered on the road anyway. Are we going to ban cars next? Drunk driving and availability of booze are real- ly two separate matters. Cars should be built with breathalyzers, so if you’re drunk, they won’t start. And at the same time, if you want booze, it should be within walking distance. We shouldn't HAVE to use a car!
