THE -employees at Humungous Bank have become infamous as a succession of sharply observed television advertisements have captured the public imagination and skewered the supposed customer policies of Canada’s largest banks. The prospect of the big banks getting bigger has many small customers worried. Last week approximately 30 protesters waved placards in front of three North Vancouver branches. The demon- stration was timed to coincide with the release of the long-awaited MacKay panel report on Canada’s finan-"- cial services. The report, when it came, had some com- forting predictions for the average consumer: more, not fewer banks; less regulation resulting in more competition and more services (such as car leasing ‘and insurance). But the report tap danced around the mooted mergers of the big banks, noting only that the mergin, caging of large banks, and/or other financial companies should be allowed if, after full public review, ‘they are found to be in the public i interest.
