A number of citizens affected by this initiative are Strongly opposed to the planned improvements. Various reasons are cited but the main grounds for opposition are: 1. The substantial increase in taxes. People on retirement or fixed incomes will find the additional expense a burden. 2. Younger homeowners are concerned about. job security and increasing mortgage Costs. 3. The destruction of the charming, semi-rural en- . vironment of our neigh- borhood. 4. The further conversion of our streets into speedways. 5. The threatened destruction of | existing fences, hedges, walks, etc. We need canvassers to obtain signatures of property owners on the petition. Volunteers are asked to phone Stu Jones at 987-2096 or Jim Millar at 988-4079. The petition requires the Signature of the registered property owner (both signatures if owned jointly) and the legal description of the property. Please have this information handy (as shown on the tax record) when the canvasser calls. J.M. Miller North Vancouver Bs Dear Editor: Your recent editorial on Bus Sense relating to the “threat wielded by North Vancouver District to West , Vancouver’s Blue Buses” re- quires a response. North Vancouver District’s involvement in the issue of a North Shore transit depot surfaced at the beginning of this year when we were made aware of the ‘intent of B.C. Transit and West Vancouver to even- tually accommodate all North Shore buses at a new transit depot in Klahanie Park. West Vancouver's Klahanie Park directly abuts the eastern bank of Capilano River, is adjacent to a number of North Vancouver single family residences and overlooked by Woodcroft development. Furthermore such a: location would re- quire the use of an under- sized local residential road for access and egress of North Vancouver buses. Council unanimously oppos- ed this plan as being an un- suitable location for an industrial-type operation and an unacceptable intru- sion into a_ residential neighbourhood. On further investigation it was determined that the par- ticular attraction held by B.C. Transit for use of this site related to an offer by West Vancouver for lease of the required area at the rate of $1.00 per year for as long as the Blue Buses are in operation. Despite the separate Blue Bus identity, all the lower mainland buses are funded out of the same provincial and regional pot. West Van- couver's transit depot located in Ambleside Park has, for years, been recognized as inadequate. Similarly the North Van- couver’s present transit depot at 3rd and St. David's in North Vancouver City has for the past 10 years been recognized as in need of upgrading and expansion. The question of the most ef- fective and efficient means of delivery of transit service to the North Shore as a whole is one that is being ad- dressed. A number of options and locations were investigated in the Spring of 1983 by an independent consultant hired by B.C. Transit. These included: *° A single site at Klahanie Park (owned by West Van- couver); *A single site in the in- dustrial Pemberton/Lloyd area (owned by I.C.B.C. and the District of North Van- couver) ° A satellite system involv- ing depots across the North Shore, (adjacent to Klahanie Park, at 3rd and St. David's and in Seymour). The District of North Van- couver agreed to make its land at the Pemberton and Lloyd site available on the same basis as West Van- couver’s offer for Klahanie Park ... that is a lease for $1.00 per year as long as the Blue Bus continues. The consultant’s evaluation con- clusively favoured the in- dustrially located Pember- ton/Lloyd site as the “best BERNADETTE’S GALLERIES 2027 Lonsdale Ave., North Vancouver (across from London Drugs) 980-7216 Bernadette’'s Gallery invites you to meet artist Bev Doolittle and view a display of her signed and numbered limited edition prints Artist Doolittle will sign her fine art poster. “The Art of Camouflage’ at this , September 23rd, 6pm-9pm. special event. ...Friday evening * **Christmas Day, give or Take a Week'' This year, Image aize 16% Wa15 AH (c. $120) 1983. While it is true that the dead-heading costs for West Vancouver buses would in- crease from the more easter- ly site at Pemberton/Lloyd rather than the satellite site near Klahanie, this is more than offset by savings in an- nual land lease, administra- tion costs, etc. ... and let us remember the funds ail come from the same pot.
