> A8 - Wednesday, March 30, 1983 - North Shore News EE mailbox Parents should pay the price Dear Editor: Re the parents who are so upset about the pending school closures in West Vancouver. I, for one, am not willing to pay any more school taxes Uses for “empty WV schools Dear Editor: The West Van School Board said they needed some ideas as to what to do, with the empfy schools here are the most probable uses: eFire training centres for shorthanded North Shore fire departments. Huge cages for stray wild mountain lions °A rock throwing contest to see Who can break the most windows. *A spray paint on brick wall graffiti contest which can be tied into Sea Festival ac- tivities *Farms to grow giant slugs so that these parents can have the privilege of having their children just where they want them to be. | notice the children would be taken by bus to other schools so I can’t see much hardship there. In my early school days, | had to walk four miles to school nght from the day I Started and in winter there would be, at least, four feet of snow with short spells when the temperature would be 40 deg. F below zero. We had to light the wood stove when we arrived and before leaving, Clean up the school. We were never sick and never missed a day at school. Our parents had to cut enough wood to heat the school all winter and no one complained. I suggest that the parents who want the extras should be prepared to pay the price, but I notice no one has made the offer. Yours in disgust, M.L. Smith West Vancouver Jazz festival tops Dear Editor: During a recent weekend (March 18 and 19) Carson Graham School hosted the B.C. Vocal Jazz Festival featuring groups from all over B.C. and the State of Washington. This is the third year that I have attended the performances and each year I come away more and more impressed. The near professiona! calibre of their talent is something to marvel at. This is the seventh year of for sale to Expo 86 _restaurants. *A dog walking area for neighbourhood pets *Hang out centres for the North Shore connection eAn excuse to hire 25 more law enforcement officers *® All of the above J. MacGillivray West Vancouver the Festival and-it-coutd be and should be one of the major yearly events on the North Shore. I would strongly urge all North Shore citizens and civic govern- ments to get behind this Festival and give it our fullest support. For my money it is certainly one of the major entertainment events of the year in our city. Watch for it next year at this time — you'll never regret it.
