B4 - Sunday, September 5, 1982 - North Shore News FOR 1983 MODELS | _ GM slashes, freezes prices OSHAWA, Ont. (UPC) - General Motors of Canada Ltd. Wednesday slashed the retail price by between $218 and $1,800 on 38 of its 1983- model cars and kept prices at 1982 levels on an ad- ditional 37 models. “This substantial pricing action is being taken to promote an early recovery in auto sales, while holding down inflation,” GM Canada President Donald Hack- worth said in a statement. “We have taken this pricing action in anticipation of reaching a labor set- tlement in Canada consistent with that achieved in the U.S. and because of con- cessions already granted by the United Auto Workers in the U.S. and by our salaried employees and suppliers in both countries,” he said. Base prices are being cut on the cempany’s slowest selling front-wheel drive cars. Up to $590 will be cut from stickers on the sub- compact J-cars — Chevrolet Cavalier, Pontiac 2000, Oldsmobile Firenza and Buick Skyhawk. Prices have been reduced $275 on the mid-sized A-cars that include the Chevrolet Celebrity, Pontiac 6000, Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera and Buick Century. GM is slashing by $1,800 the base price of the Cadillac Seville. The automaker said another $480 has been taken off the price of the Cimarron by making optional equipment standard. Prices are being frozen on the front-wheel drive compact X-cars — Chevrolet Citation, Pontiac 1000 and Phoenix, Olsd- mobile Omega and Buick Skylark — plus the rear- drive Chevrolet Chevette, GM said. ' Average base car in- creases on other car lines range from $392 to $813, representing increases less than the prevailing inflation rate. ~GM Canada will provide a 36-month = or kilometer engine warranty on 1983 passenger car models equipped with diesel engines. Hackworth said the pricing action is well within the federal government's 6 and 5-percent restraint guidelines. Diesel engines gaining popularity in new cars The diesel engine has been popular in heavy duty vehicles for some _ time, mainly due to its high power and torque potential at low speeds. However, in the last three years, the worldwide popularity of the diesel engine for use in passenger cars has risen dramatically. One of the main reasons for this change has been economic considerations. There are definite fuel consumption benefits in-. ~ volved in the use of a diesel engine over a_ gasoline engine. But what's the basic difference between the two engine types? In brief, a diesel engine operates on the physical laws which state that as a gas is compressed, the tem- perature of the gas rises. In a diesel engine, the fuel/air mixture is compressed to a point at which there is enough heat to cause the mixture to ignite and burn. _ In a gasoline engine on the other hand, the fuel/air mixture is compressed and ignited by the spark from a spark plug. With the _ increasing popularity of the diesel engine, more and more diesel engine research is being carried out in Canada.
