Bae “> 4 iy LL of ‘BURBIDGE FROM PAGE A1 residents have turned out in their thousands to vote for hospital-endorsed can- _ didates. * Pro-Life was dealt another ‘blow in January with the “resignation of one of its four . remaining members on the ‘board - Norm Duce. Duce ~was replaced by West Vancouver resident Fred Russell, who backs the ‘hospital stand on abortion. ' LGH policy is to perform ‘abortions in cases approved - by its abortion committee. Of the 799 abortion ap- plications received in 1981 and the 209 of the first quarter of this year, not one was refused. Local Pro-Life supporters maintain this is tantamount to abortion on demand, where abortion is so readily available it has assumed the funtion of birth control. Of the three remaining Pro-Life board members, only George Carruthers and Michacl Whelton are seeking re-election. Both have already refused demands that they resign from the current board as a result of their initiating 2 court case against the Hospital over its abortion policy. The action filed by them in federal court alleges that the hospital has broken the law with almost every abortion carried out there by approving abortions on health grounds not recognized in the Criminal Code of Canada - i.c. on social and economic grounds. Carruthers is a lawyer practicing civil litigation and a North Vancouver resident who has served on the hospital’s building, finance and bylaws committees. Whelton is a West Van resident and business consultant and has been chairman of the. hospital's employee relationa com- mittee for the past two ycars. Also standing. on the Pro- Life slate are Mra.
