Department of Highways personnel have been working since last year to pian some sort of runaway lane at the terminal to stop trucks that lose control coming down the hill. Johnson says that while a runaway lane has been designed for the terminal the Highways personnel are still not too happy with it. He said such a lane would be “very expensive” as “there has never been anything of the size built in the province before.” Johnson says the concern is with slowing the truck down without killing the driver in doing so. He said he met with Highways representatives about two weeks ago and they are still looking at various proposals to solve the problem. He says they now agree that a runaway lane may nol be the answer. Johnson says he is in favour of setting up a booth or a truck scale at the top of the hill to force truck drivers to stop and change into low gear. Having the trucks stop at the top would solve the problem, Johnson said. Truckers are currently required to stop and check the brakes on their trucks at the top of the hill but it is felt many truck drivers do not do this. Controlling runaway trucks at Horseshoe Bay “is still a fairly hot subject,” Johnson says and he adds that the pressure is on to find a solution soon.
