world? Sounds crazy, ‘doesn't
it?) And yet- this was the
situation. in. the Finnish
county of North 1 Karelia.

The situation was so bad

‘that the citizens themselves

petitioned the government
to do something about it.
-That was in 1971 and. the
overnment acted promptly.
They appointed Dr. Pekka
Puska as’ Director of: the
North Karelia Project. |

Dr. Puska, recently in
Edmonton to attend a World
Health Organization
meeting,, was brought to
Vancouver by the B. Cc.

Recent firearms amnesty
has resulted in almost 7,500

weapons being’ either
properly registered or
surrendered to police

departments throughout the
province, states Attorney-
General Garde Gardom.

In excess of 13,000 rounds
of ammunition, including 70
explosive devices, such as

hand grenades, have been,

turned over to authorities.

While pleased with public
response to the amnesty,
Mr. Gardom_ expressed
concern over the fact that
only three dozen ap-
plications for Firearms and
