The most unusual new book in this section is An Empire of His Own by Neal Gabler, in which the noted film critic has written an original and entertaining group bi- ography of the Jewish immigrants who founded and came to doni- nate the American film industry. Among those discussed are Louis B. Mayer and the Warner brothers. Former Senate aide and speech-writer Christopher Mat- thews exposes the inside story on American politics in Hardball: bow politics is piayed. Popular true-crime chronicler Joseph Wambaugh (The Onion Learn organic gardening DURING ENVIRONMENT Week, June 3 to June 11, the Lynn Canyon Ecology Centre will be of- fering events and information ses- sions for anyone interested in organic gardening. There are several simpie steps involved in beginning an organic garden or switching from chemical pesticides and fertilizers to more natural alternatives on an existing garden, Position your garden, or plant- ers, in a location that receives at least five or six hours of sun every day. A rule of thumb is: plants from which you eat the leaves can toler- ate the most. shade, those from which you eat the fruit need the most sun, with the root crops fall- ing somewhere in between. Most organic gardeners agree that the secret to their success is in soil preparation. . ' Treat the soil as if it were a tiv- ing, breathizg, thirsting and often hungry organism. Composting, the breaking down of food and garden wastes into a :, soil conditioner, is one of the best ways to fertilize your gerden. Chemical fertilizers require a lot of energy to. produce and they also leach out of gardens into local - Yivers and streams. - Plant selection is another impor- tant part of organic gardening. Choose plants that are hardy and suited to our West Coast climate. Look for varieties that are disease and pest resistant. Follow direc- tions on seed packages as to when to plant them, how much water they need, and what type of soil they prefer. When the plants are healthy, with lots of sunlight, water and good soil, they are mest resistant to attacks from insects. Remember that not al! insects are harmful te plants, and some are actually beneficial. Encourage Spiders, ladybugs and lacewings. Birds, snakes and frogs also con- trol insect population. Certain plants act as natural repellents to some insects: marigolds, onions, herbs and nasturtiums. If the plants are still susceptible to insects, then knock the bugs off ‘with a jet of water from a hose, or make a natural insect spray by mixing water with an equal amount of crushed onions.
