IF FASHION: A Crash Course
was striving for textbook accu-
racy, we'd give it a failing grade.
Misspelled names and incorrect attri-
butions — the book credits Hollywood
costumer Edith Head for Audrey
Hepburn’s gamine style, not Givenchy
-— undermine the authors’ credibility.
Where Tucker and Kingswell succeed
is in providing an entertaining read with
page upon page of light fare about the
wonderful yet wacky world of fashion.
Packed with eye-catching graphics,
photos and illustrations, this small hard-
cover book chronicles both the highs
(the invention of nylon) and lows (leg-
warmers, Dynasty) of fashion. It’s all
here: from the white polyester suit John
Travolta wore in Saturday Night Fever

Flipping through fashion’s wackiness

to the eye-popping Versace “safety pin”
dress Liz Hurley wore to the delight of
tabloid photographers.

On every page, a timeline traces fash-
ion and fad back to its earliest appear-
ance. In a chapter called “Piercing
Looks: Tattoos and Body Modification”
the historical timeline includes the dis-
covery in the Austrian Alps in 1991 ofa
5,000-year-old corpse with tattoos on
its back, knees and ankles.

The book’s irreverent tone will
shock and surprise. Chanel, say the
authors, “was a racist, homophobic
Nazi sympathizer whose extraordinary
talent for design was matched by a.
