IN spite of a cool and
wet spring, many of the
heat loving annuals are
beginning to grow and
bloom.

Unfortunately all the weeds
and cool season plants are
growing faster than ever.

Walking around your gar-
den on a regular basis helps you
keep in touch with these sud-
den changes in growth pat-
terns. Some of the overly vigor-
ous plants will need to be cut
back before they crowd their
smaller neighbours. Others that
grow too rank may have to be

staked or tied in to prevent the
top heavy blooms from collaps-
ing. It is always best to try to
hide the stake and string in the
foliage or use one of the new
type wire frames. Tomatoes, in
particular, grow very rapidly

prone to fall over and snap off.

Many garden weeds are casy
to pull in moist soil but become
harder to remove as the soil
dries out. Pulling one weed
before it goes to seed is better
than pulling a hundred or more
after it goes to seed. Some of
the low creeping weeds are
adapted to breaking at the soil
line when pulled. The only way
to beat chickweed and oxalis (a
small clover like plant with pur-
ple-green leaves and yellow
flowers) is to lift the soil with a
fork and shake the roots free
with the leaves. Weeds can also

In spite of all the rain in the
early part of the summer, the
moisture levels can drop quite
quickly once the sunny weather
arrives. Check the soil moisture
by digging a small hole in sev-
eral places around the garden.
Areas around large trees and
close to the house will be the
first to dry out. Add an inch of
water in the early morning.

branches can be cut back by a
third and water sprouts and
sucker shoots removed alto-
