Question: I was in the mall with
my friend when she saw a leather
jacket she really liked. [t was on
sale for one day only for $600.
She did not have her credit card
and asked if I would charge it on
mine and she would give me the
money the next week.

That was three months ago and
{ have long since paid the bill.
Every time [ ask her for the
money she tells me she will get it
to me next week. I don't believe
she is ever going to pay me. I
don't want to take my friend to
court, but what else can I do?

Answer: In spite of what's hap-
pened, it seems the friendship is
stil important to you. Perhaps
your friend has not been able to
afford to pay you back as origi-
nally planned. It is fikely she is
embarrassed and in order to avoid
talking about it keeps putting you
off. In any case, you both seem to
be having trouble addressing it.

Have you ever thought of trying
mediation? A mediator may be
able to help you and your friend
work out how you will be repaid
in a way that will also preserve the
relationship.

In mediation, you would have
an opportunity to explain to your
friend in what way carrying the
$600 debt has been difficult for
you. You also need to understand
from her why she hasn’t been able
