than simply learning to balance.

There are bicycle courses
available to cyclists of all ages to
help learn how to operate a bicycle
correctly and how to deat with
traffic situations and road hazards.

The purchase of a bieyele for a
child carries with it many respon-
sibilities.

When should a child get a bicy-
cle? According to the Bicycling
Association of B.C. (BABC),
children under nine or 10, or in
Grade 3 to 4, cannot be expected

Children aged between six and
eight have enormous agility, but
not much ability. Their behavior is
extremely unpredictable.

A child’s inexperience, combin-
ed with size and other physical
limitations, makes a new bicycle a
very dangerous vehicle.

if a child is under nine, say the
BABC, bicycle nding should be
limited to off-road enjoyment.

This does not mean that a child
under (his ave should not have a
bicycle, It does mean that you and
your youngster can spend a year,

or longer, learning ‘‘bicycle matu-
rity’.

At home or in other locations
that have safe acces, a supervised
child can learn and practise how to
ride properly. This is the time to
make sure that the child knows
how to operate the bicyele,
especially the brakes.

Children can begin to learn road
safety from the seat of your car,
says the BABC. If you set a good
example by driving carefully and
explaining what you are doing and
why, your child will have some
understanding of vehicle behavior
before riding on the road.
