say battles ferry traffic Dear Editor: Re: Article on Bae “Port of Chang Asa member oof tie Horseshoe Bay Busines & Community Association, I agree with whar was said in this article concermmg, BC Ferris’ attempt to compete with focal merchants. This is only one issue that is brewing. ‘The see- ond issue is thar ot moving tat fic. For years, Argyle Avenue residents have been batling to save their residential street, Lost year, because they were run- ning out of highway room, BC Ferries began using, Argyle asa lining-up area for the Bowen Island terry. After much debate and with the cooperuion of the West Vancouver Council, the west end of Argyle was converted Into a one-way area LOINg west, thereby shutting of f access to the ferry lineups. The result of this action, as good- intentioned as it was, cre- ated a far larger monster: mov- ing traffic including, tht bed trailers, trucks, cour buses, ete. traveling west on Argyte. Especially during che summer months, it is dangerous to walk along this residential street. One month after the changes were made last summer, BC Ferries began closing off exit No. | to Highway 99, forcing very confused and angry travel- Horseshoe ers dowinon te Argade Avenue trying to find the escape route back up to 99, There is now a Department of Highways sign directing traf tice going to evr New] and Highway 99 down Argyle Avenue. Vehicles that) cannot get inte the ferry Hineup tron Keith Road are routinely directed down Aric Avenue to foop again and again, or find their way out of the bay, Since when can BC Ferries and the Highwars determine, without any consultation, that a rest dentia! street can be used as a major thoroughfare for nen i 2 Since when can : amd othe Department oof | Highways destroy the quality of Ife, say ing nothing of the property val: ues, of the residents on a previ- ously quiet street? We want West) Vancouver Couneil, before allowing any Department of new BO Ferries nitutives ta proceed, to develop a mastez trate plan tor the areca in and around Horseshoe Bay chat will serve the residents, businesses, aad destination visitars and: to pur this trattic plan inte effect. Any adjeent: inunatives must adhere to this plan. There sone other existing RE) Ferry terminal located in the heart of a residential com munity. The needs of the resi dents and businesses in Horseshoe Bay are paramount. ‘The streets, residents, and businesses of the bay cannot be Used as an extension of the terry systent ~~ and they cannot be used as an extension of the provincial highway system! We will attend the Oct. 5 West Vancouver Council meet- ing tocnsure that the quality of hte in’ Horseshoe destroyed. Grol M. Sections of the trail are certainly 45 degrees or better. Bur ifthe trail rakes 2.9 km te rise 853 metre: as the story says, then the average steepness is under 30 degrees, not 45, As any skier will confirm, that’s at least a black diamond difference.
