NCL Cellist goes solo with VSO Layne Christensen News Reporter layne@nsnews.com AS principal cellist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Lee Duckles sometimes longs for the sound of silence. “T's a tiiny thing,” savs the musician at home in Lynn Vallev, “playing with an orchestra all day with the trombones blowing in vour ears... Freal- ly respect silence. “A great joy for me is to rake the dogs out on a walk in Lynn Canvon to bear the sounds of nature.” Tes a natural then that when the VSO mounts irs nexe Tea and Trumpets afternoon concert at the Orpheum Wednesday, Feb. 4, Duckles will per- torm the Adagio from Antonin Dvorak'’s Srlenz Woods. The Adagio is “quict, tranquil and meditative,” savs Duckles, and a nice counterpoint to Dvorak’s other works, which are lively and vigorous. Dvorak’s compositions strongly evoke the folk music of the compeser’s native Bohemia The symphony program also includes seiections trom Dvorak’s Slaronie Dance, the Covel Snite and the Prague Wales.
