The botanical garden held its first Seedy Sarurday eight years agp. Since then, the idea of a heritage seed day has caught on with other garden clubs across the country, azcording to Aimee Murrell of VanDusen’s seed collectors" dub, which is organizing the event. The focus of Seedy Saturday is the conservation of hard-to-find heritage seeds. “There are so many hybrids today. We're trying to save the basic genes of the native plants,” says Murrell, who is hoping to find seeds from spe- cialty beans and squash for her West Van garden. Gardeners who have saved seed from a favorite plant are invited to join in the seed exchange and receive someone else’s reassured heirloom seeds. There will also be a wide variety of seed for sale. VanDusen’s seed collectors’ club will be taking orders for seeds collected in 1996. This year, according to: Murrell, the club has assembled 10,000 seed packages. These include vines, shrubs, trees, grasses, perennials, herbs, vegetables and annuals. The event takes place from 10.a.m. to 4 p.m., with Iectures at ltam. 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. VanDusei is located at Oak and 37th Avenue in Vancouver. Admission is by donation.
