14 — Sunday, March 31, 1996 — North Shore News Heat turned up im arson case A SUSPECTED arson on March 20 in West Vancouver’s Ambleside area has turned into an attempted murder inves- tigation. By Anna Marie D'Angelo LY ED News Reporter “The focus of the investi- gation has changed,” said West Vancouver Police (WVP) Sgt. Barry Nickerson. . Fire ripped through the Bijan Specialty: Foods store at 1451 Clyde Ave. and a townhouse above. ; Both are. owned by Manoucher and Tahereh Jiany.. The couple lived in the townhouse with their 21- year-old daughter, Manijeh. The couple have one. son ' who :-was not present at the time of the fire. ' To press time, Manoucher, 64, remained in Vancouver Hospital's. burn unit with extensive burns to - his-body an fac - according: to Nickerson. A neighbor, alerted to the fire by a bleeding Tahereh, had braved the blaze and found Manoucher engulfed in flames from the waist up in the main living area of the family’s home. The neighbor threw a rug over the man and dragged him outside on the balcony. To press time, the daugh- ter, Manijeh, had been removed from a respirator and was breathing on her own at Lions Gate Hospital, according to Nickerson. West Vancouver firefight- ers found Manijeh uncon- scious from smoke inhala- tion in the upstairs bathroom of the two-storey burning townhouse. Her mother, Tahereh, was taken to hospital and released about -two hours later, according to WVP. Nickerson said that Tahereh was interviewed extensively by police. He said WVP investiga- tors want to talk to Manijeh and Manoucher. Meanwhile, three mem- bers of the North Shore's Iranian community have set up a trust fund for Tahereh at the Royal Bank in Park Royal Shopping Centre. Donations may be made to the trust. fund which is under the names of Piroul, Tahsili and “Filsoof for Tahereh Jiany. A trust fund spokesman said that Tahereh has not asked for help, but her friends believe that she may need household items.
