This year's program, which gets under way on Saturday, May 29, focuses On a circus theme, with per- formances by Cirkids, a Vancouver: based children’s company, and Quebee’s Cirque Eloize, Popular headliners Charlotte Diamond and Raffi, favorites of the under-cight set, are back for another year. “Raffi took a couple of years off while he was rethinking his life,” says special events coordinator and North Shore resident Corky Melniyre. “We're really glad to have him back." Artists Rick Scott, Filetta Fish and the North Shore's White Thunder Cultural Society are among several local acts to be featured in the open-air bandshell, and newcom- ers such as Germany's Theatre Waidspeicher and France's tarak theatre d'objects ave expected to be big hits. “Turak will be for the very adventurous,” suys McIntyre, a for- mer fibrarian and children’s festival junkie, “They take found objects — milk cartons, brooms, etc. — and incorporate them into very unusual performance pieces.” African performances have tradi- tionally been the most popular. This year the South African-based Theatre tor Africa is giving in- school workshops just before the festival gets under way. “Part of their performance focus- es on endangered species. ‘The pro- gram in the school will be a move- ment-based workshop where kids will learn how to move like ani- mals,” Miller says. One of the biggest changes to the festival has been the widening scope of the festival program. Over the years it has moved away froma strictly European focus towards a more multi-cultural variety of acts. “Now it’s truly international,” observes Miller. “Kids don’t get the opportunities to see theatre, dance or music from places like South « America or Africa. In the '80s we brought in a lot of acts from China and Japan.
