Musical notes

TWELVE young musi-
cians were recognized
with awards Sunday for
their accomplishments
in musical study.

The North Shore branch
of the Registered Music
Teachers’ Association
(NSRMTA) presented
$1,000 in awards Dec. 14
during a scholarship recital at
St. Andrews Church in North
Vancouver. The association
established the award pro-
gram in "95 to encourage
excellence in music study.

Awards are given to stu-
dents of voice, piano and
string instruments who
receive top marks in Rovat
Conservatory, Western Board
and Victoria Conservatory
exams, One award is present-
ed for each grade level.

This year’s award winners
are Hanna Rebane
(Introductory), Andrew
Pickering (Grade 1), Keira
Gordon and Andy Hsu
(Grade 2), Christopher Koo
(Grade 3), Jaciey Liu (Grade
4), Willard Wong (Grade 5),
Jason Tjoei (Grade 6},
Michelle Hui (Grade 7),
Gabriel Wong (Grade 8),
Christopher Chok (Grade 9)
and Lydia Pak (Grade 10).

The 17 talented vouths
who comprise the Narth
Shore-based vocal coscinble
Chantelope will raise their
voices Saturday at Mount
Seymour United Church.

Their Christmas concert,
Can't Buy Me Love, is 3
merry mix of sacred and sve-
ular seasonal favorites, says
Gillian Hunt, who formed
the ensemble just over a year
ago. Hunt is also director of
the popular all-women vocal
ensemble Pandera’s Vox.

Expect to hear: Sana
Claus is Coming to Town,
White Christmas, Rudolph the
Red Nosed Reindser, Have
Yourself a Merry Little
Christmas and a rendition of
the Lennon/McCartney hit
Can’t Buy Me Love.

Performance is at 8 p.m.
Tickets are $14 tor adults,
$12 for seniors and youth,
available at the door and by

to Centennial Theatre this

This vear, the production
moves to the Norch
Vancouver stage.
