LeonofPs second study of the studio (da Enterprising Life:
Leonard Frank Photographs, 1895-1944 was published by
‘Talon Books in 1990) is an exquisitely constructed art book
conraining over 300 photographs taken by the late Vancouver
photographer Ouo Landauer. The images document the
development of Vancouver in the post-World War Two penod
through the lens of a professional photographer. Some of the
matenal is reminiscent of Margaret Bourke-White and achicugs _.
a similar poctic effect.

Several of the photographs were taken on the North Shore
including a series on the construction of the Second Narrows
Bridge in 1958.

DARYL Duke's 1972 film Payday (shot on location in
Alabama) featured Rip Torn (above, with Elayne
Heilveil and Ahna Capri) as a country singer touring
with his entourage in a custom-built Cadilfac.

WEST Vancouver’s Daryl Duke has had a long suc-
cessful career as a director in television and film.

He graduated in English and philosophy trom UBC and joined
the National Film Board as a writer, filty editor and assistant diree
tor in 1950. In 1953 Duke returned to Vancouver where he
worked as a supervising producer of the Vancouver Film Cnit ar
CBC's new affiliate CBUT.

“In Toronto in 1958 to 1964, Duke produced Close-Up, a
Explorations, and Quest, leaving for the United States in 1964 to | & f ‘ .
produce the Steve Allen Show and taccr the Les Crane Saw tor :
ABC. After 1965 Duke worked mainly in film and the following = § ,
TV series: Telescope, Document, Sunday, Quentin Durgens in , a a

Canada, and The Senators, The Poychiatrist, and The Bold Onesin the
United States. Duke received an Frmy Award in 1970 as best
director for The Dav the Lion Died, made in the series The Senators.
duke joined Norman Klenman and Edward Cowan in 1968 to
form the produciton company Galanty Productions in Vancouver.”
