Cable service cut in W. Van APPROXIMATELY 2,000 West Vancouver Shaw Cable subscribers were without cable television service on Thanksgiving Day after a power supply line fuse blew Monday morning. Subscribers in the Ambleside and British Properties areas tost cable service for the entire day. According to Skaw Cable system manager Terry Medd, the problem was compounded by a mechanical maifunction in the cable company’s holiday telephone answering service. “The calls (fram disgruntied TV viewers) didn’t get answered and emergency crews on standby weren't alerted. We wish to sincerely apologize,’’ Medd said. Service was restored by Tuesday morning. Said Medd, ‘‘We’ve put procedures in place so that hepefully the mechanical malfunction with the phones won’t happen again.” Electricity burns NV man’s body A NORTH Vancouver man was in stable condition in Burnaby Genera! Brothers House Moving Ltd. of New Westminster died instantly after being electrocuted, while two other workers were unhurt. ‘Dead are Thomas Louis Grubert, 26, of New Westminster, and Stacey Troy Sarchuk, 25, of Cedar, B.C. The coroner’s office and the Workers’ Compensation Board are investigating the incident. Jail-N-Bail drive succeeds THE CANADIAN Cancer Society’s first annual Jai!-N-Bail fund- raising drive is being called an overwhelming success by event or- ganizers. The North Shore alone accounted fer approximately $60,000 of the more than $282,000 raised over three days last week. To get involved, residents called a Jail-N-Bail hotline to arrange for the arrest of someone. For a $25 donation, an off-duty police officer was dispatched to haul the accused off in a paddy wagon. Once in custody, baii was set and the guilty party had an hour (o raise bail by phone. Said North Shore Jail-N-Bail chairman Sally Sapinsky, ‘‘We were trying to put the fun back into fundraising and this event did that. The community support was terrific. The people who agreed to go to jail were gencrous and everybody had a wonderful time.’” The effort was supported by more than 45 sponsors. Over 90 volunteers helped to keep the Park Royal South Jail-N-Bail hoosegow epen for business by acting as judges, clerks and juries. North Vancouver RCMP and West Vancouver Police provided the manpower and transportation to make the local zrrests. The event was held in White Rock, Vancouver, New Westminster and on the North Shore. Funds reised will be used to help fund the society’s research, education and patient services programs.
