I am not surprised that Doug Collins, along with our govern- ment, still cannot see the point. The point is that we have a cursing. shortage crisis not only in this province but in this country. More young women and men are choosing alternative higher paying careers, for the same ariount of education. We are not able to re- ‘Nursing shortage is a crisis tain the highly-trained, profes- sional nurses we already have. Strike or no strike, we cannot do the transplants we would like to anyway, because of the shortage of trained critical care nurses. It is not fair to blame the present nurses for the fact that the nursing profession is atiracting fewer and fewer individuals all the time. If conditions and wages do not improve after the strike, we can only thank the nurses for getting the messages out. Janet Reyse RNosth Vancoaver Collins will eventually applaud OPEN LETTER TO DOUG COLLINS: 1 truly hope, that I as the nurse have made you sick, Mr. Collins, because it seems the only way you'll grasp even a fundamental understanding of what nurses do- and what has motivated us to strike is to be a patient yourself. Which brings me to my first point of clarification. Public sup- port exists. because most people have received nursing care directly or indirectly through having family or friends in hospitals. They have sion and our clinical expertise and knowledge despite our long hours and heavy work loads. Secondly, our right to strike is far less damaging than your right to print such meaningless and cruel banter: You are a sorry soul and your ignorance is communicated with a painful sting. But don’t worry, Mr. Collins, despite your negativism expressed against the nurses, I’m sure that you'll be applauding your nursing care, too, when it’s your turn.
