§ ~ Friday, May 26, 1989 ~ North Shore News Resident not impressed with hose reel ‘drunk’ Dear Editor: And so friends, we once again draw to a close the festivities of the 1989 Fireman’s Hose Ree! Festival or North Van’s Annual Drunk at Mahon Park, as it is becoming better known. Undoubtedly, this growing gaia event each year brings more peo- ple, more hot dogs and, yes, more alcohol. The night before, as I was walking my dog, I witnessed the arrival of two transports loaded with copious quantities of beer, with which the crowds were to be lured to the following day’s mass party. I suppose that’s the best way to get people to come out to this sort of thing, and I don’t argue that the caus is not worthwhile. Editorial was ‘a discredit’ Dear Editor: On April 9 there was an editorial in the North Skore News headed Costly Challenge about the Coll- ingwood School expansion issue. I did not like to see it, for it did discredit to the paper. In part, the editorial used the phrases ‘‘an insult to the tax- payers’”” and “‘to the democratic process," Quite the contrary, it is exactly the democratic process which makes it a right of any citizen who feels himself wrongly done by to be able to mount a legal challenge. All honest and sincere citizens will support such a right. We What bothers me, is that when it’s all over, guess what everyone does? You guessed it, they stumble to their cars and drive home. Of course, there are those who have more sense, but let’s face it, there are quite a few who couldn’t care less. And where are the police? Where are the road checks? When I called to see who was monitoring the situation, the RCMP recep- tionist said, ‘‘What Hose Reel Contest?”’ I learned afterwards from a con- stable and a fire department orga- nizer that absolutely no arrange- ments were made to control the violation of a law which I’m sure everyone on earth supports — drinking and driving. fought the Second World War on just that issue. Your generation should be thankful that we did, at a frightful cost. Councils are not elected to ‘“‘sit in judgement.’’ To make decisions, sometimes tough, yes, but not to sit in judgement. Whoever wrote that editorial quite obviously did not know the facts of the case. It is sad to see the North Shore News, which has done so well of late, publish such nonsense. Cagtaia G.E.
