4-3 HOCKEY WIN OVER AMERICANS 15 - Wednesday, November 23, 1988 - North Shore News iC Fiames end losing streak AFTER SUFFERING a 12-7 shellacking vt the hands of the Pilots in Abbocsford on Nov.15, the NSWC Flames rebounded with a hard-earned and well-deserved 4-3 win at home Nov. 19 over the Seattle Northwest Americans in West Coast Junior Hockey League action. In Saturday’s hard-hitting, close-checking clash at the Winter Club, two crucial goals by Ken Savage earned the Flames a dramatic 4-3 overtime win for the Flames while ending the team’s losing streak at four games. Andrew Merilees’ unassisted goal at the 8:17 mark of the first period stood up for a 1-0 Flames’ Jead until the midpoint of the third period. But then the shootout began. Two unanswered Seattle goals ~ the first coming at 11:19 and the second at 15:04, put the Americans in front 2-1, Nineteen seconds later Flames’ newcomer Rob McLaughlin knot- ted the score at two. Then with only forty-seven se- conds remaining in the game, the Americans notched what appeared to be the game winner. But a great individual effort by Savage saved the day for the Flames. Picking up a McLaughlin and goaltender Gary Knight at his own blueline, Savage stickhandled his way through the relay from Seattle defenders to score the equalizer at 19:32 and send the game into overtime. Savage’s game winner, which was assisted by Merilees, came with only thirty seconds remaining in the sudden victory overtime period. Knight, who was outstanding in goal for the Flames, stopped 32 shots — four coming in overtime while the Seattle netminder made 34 stops — three of them in over- time. When the two teams last met at the end of October in Seattle, the Americans defeated the Flames 4- 3...also in overtime. On Nov, 15 at Abbotsford, the two teams traded power-play goals early in the game. The Pilots scored the first two Minutes into the opening frame and the Merilees’ reply from Ken Savage and Kevin Buh at the 5:28 mark. Abbotsford outscored the Flames four goals to two in the se- cond period with Savage accoun- ting for both of the Flames’ goals on the power play en route to a hat trick on the night. The Flames trailed the Pilots 8-3 after two periods. Each team added four goals in the final period with Merilees scor- ing his second of the game, Buhr adding a pair and Savage com- pleting scoring for the Flames with his hat trick goal. Other Flame point-getters were Scott Sterling and McLaughlin with a pair of assists and Wade Bartwk, Brian Lee and Mike Lof- tus with an assist each. The Flames ovtshot the Pilots 38-37 with Knight and Kevin Rad- bourne sharing duties between the Pipes.
