AS OUR winter approaches and we anticipate some cold and windy days ahead, we need to include the srotection of our trees and shrubs in our fall cleanup plans. Raking up leaves is important to protect your lawns and is also im- portant in a different way for your trees and shrubs. Compost made from leaves will be an excellent organic mulch for your flower beds and gardens next year and the raking of leaves and composting them helps reduce the overwinter- ing of fungus disease which may affect your trees in the spring. If you have trees that have been bad- ly attacked by fungus blight or dogwoods with dogwood leaf blotch, rake up these leaves and burn them to ensure that fungus does not last the winter. {f you are doing a fall lime treatment for your fawns remember that in most cases lime is for lawns. Most of your trees and shrubs will prefer a more acidic soil and lime will not make them happy. Ideally, you should always have a grass-free bed around the base of any tree or shrub growing in or beside your lawn. This will help promote good tree health, If you decide to create such beds as a part of your fall cleanup and remove sod in the process, be sure to refill the area with a good mulch to protect roots which may have been exposed. By far the most severe damage to trees and shrubs during winter is caused by wind and by snow or frozen rain. Long limbs or heavy branches whipping in the wind or weighed down with wet snow will snap or rip. This can often ruin the tree or shrub completely or cause ir- reparable or unsightly damage. J have previously mentioned the im- portance of such procedures as cabling and bracing larger trees, the tying of pyramidal evergreen trees and pruning both trees and shrubs to reduce size, remove rub- bing cross limbs and protect against other potential damage. It is now time to do this work or Tree Talk By Brian Fisher have it done for you by qualified tradesmen. Winter protection is required by your smaller shrubs and plants as well. While it is not the right time to prune rhododendrons, magnolias and other early flowering shrubs, Se $169.00 they can be protected by tying or bracing. Shrubs growing cn trellises, along walls and fences or other areas where they are partially supported can be protected by en- suring that ties are in place on trellises and fences and are sound and will not fall over in the wind taking valuable plants with them. An ounce of string may be worth a pound of cure in this case. Do it now and avoid untimely winter damage. i Visit RHEA this VWWEEKEND for featured in store Example.
