Journey for Lives cash put to good use

THE GOAL of the Journey for
Lives Run of raising substantial
money to combat cancer was a
success,

A total of $8.5 million was
donated to the Canadian Cancer
Society across Canada for cancer
research, education and patient
services.

A net revenue of $3,319,923 was
raisedin B.C...

Almost half the money raised
here has been allocated to research
through the National Cancer In-
stitute of Canada, the research arm
of the Canadian Cancer Society,
and the Pacific Pulmonary
Research Society.

The remaining 50 per cent will
stay in the province to be spent on
. special projects which provide
tangible benefits to the Society’s
Education and Patient Services
programs.

Some interesting and useful pro-
jects have already been approved
and the first project to be com-
pleted is a video called No
Fears...No Tears: Children with
Cancer Coping with Pain. This
educational documentary demon-
Strates various psychological tech-
niques and the role of parents in
helping children with cancer cope
with the pain and anxiety of pain-
ful medical procedures,

The video is co-produced by Dr.
J. Mavis Teasdale, head of the
Oncology/Hematology Division,
and Dr. Leora Kuttner, Clinical
Psychologist at B.C. Children's
Hospital.

direction of Dr. Kuttner, the video
sensitively demonstrates how
children and their parents learn to
cope \with painful procedures
through imaginary involvement,
other forms of hypnosis, and
