“It used to be you had to go
to Toronto, then the States,
and then Europe,’’ Ray said,
“but you can make a living
in Canada now, things are
changing. I won't go to
Europe until I've built a

This production of Fidelio
is a good example of the
changing status of Canadian
opera singers, being com-
posed almost entirely of
regional artists.

But the production is sung
in German, and as most of
the singers aren’t familiar
with the language, Ray who
speaks four languages
fluently, had the task of
coaching the chorus in Ger-
man diction. As he spent
two years teaching English in
Germany it was a simple
matter of using the same
