Norse history is

ENTERING NORWAY, one has to - recognize
that here is a country whose ‘‘age of greatness”’
occurred in the 13th Century when the Norwegian
maritime empire encompassed Greenland,
Iceland, the Orkneys, Shetlands, Outer and Inner
Hebrides, Faeroes, the Isle of Man and. much of

Scotland.

As early as 1110 A:D., a ~

Norwegian king, Sigurd the
Crusader, was the first.
foreign potentate to visit the
New Kingdom of Jerusalem,.
where his 60 ships took part
in the siege of Sidon. And,
of course, prior to that, Vik-
ing ships—called, wonder-
fully, ‘‘swan of the sea-
god’’—spread across the
‘whale bath’? (the original
‘Norse word for ocean) to
pillage along the fringes of
Christendom... .
