Vancouver celebrates cinema.

INTERNATIONAL is the key word to the Fourth

Annual Vancouver Film Festival that will light up

the screens.

In 1984, Toronto’s festival
showed 400 films while the
Montreal festival offered 205
films. Both cities had
budgets in the area of $1
million, heavily subsidized
through corporate and go--
ernment grants.

Vancouver's 1985 festival
has received under $1000 in
grants to date, and is hoping
to collect a $10,000 grant
from Telefilm Canada. This
year’s budget is around
$300,000 with 60,000: per-
sons needed to: attend the

The festival director is not
complaining, however, he
does hope to become a paid
fulltime director for next
year if funding permits.

But this year, with 50 vol-
unteers, the festival goes on,
expanding to three theatres

including The Ridge, The

. Vancouver East Cinema and

The Hollywood. Last year’s
festival used only The Ridge
and Vancouver East
Cinema, offering a total of
80 films.

‘ “In the four years since

we've started, filmgoers have
gone from 39 films to 67
films to 80 films and now up
to 170 films for this year,’’
recalled Schein.
