Auyway, a reader is anx- ious to hear about any cozy hide inns, guesthouses and watering holes on the Islands so if you have any favorite spots, let me know so we can help her out. Special spots are some- thing like recipes — people hate to give away the secret. With today’s economy everyone’s business is in jeopardy, especially those depending on luxury spen- ding. If we want our “special spots’? to stay in business so that we can en- joy them, we'd better make sure they get lots of plugs. 2a DEAR BARBARA: This may seem like an odd aspect of travel to discuss in your column — nothing ex- otic! Have you had any experi- ence with kids in summer camps? How should I find a good one to.send my daugh- ter to this summer? She's 10 and has uever been away from home by herself. ANSWER: When | was 10, 1 joined C.G.I.T. — not because | was all fired-up to become a wholesome, religious Canadian girl but because they had a summer camp. Every girl J knew went to this marvellous place for a couple of weeks in the summer and J’d set my heart on going. I struggled through a long winter knitting booties for the undrprivileged, serving at church socials and singing hymns while decked out in a middy blouse and a navy blue skirt. Finally the time came to sign up for camp and I raced home with the form. My parents refused (o let me go! I never found out why. If tears and tantrums have ever worked they should have that summer — many other parents would have “pleaded with the camp io take this kid. Instead, ! spent the loneliest two weeks of my life followed by weeks of being feft out of alt the nostalgia and inside jokes. My own kids started with travel- ee eee by Barbara McCreadie ESET wore the same jeans and shirt for a week — day and night. [t seems that the bays had peck-holes (or said they did!) into both the shower roozas and the dorms and not one girl in the place un- dressed for a week. Still, they had a great tinfe and were always anxious to return, Camps run by reputable church and service organiza- tions are generally well run, with trained, experienced counsellors. Id be leery of any private camp where many of the staff were teen-agers. I'd be aware of co-ed camps -- boys and girls at 10 don’t mingle all that well and by the time they get a bit older they mingle too darn well, The most frightening thought is that some parents send their kids off to camp without doing any checking on the standards governing the place, For example, B.C. has no legislation governing children’s camps — these fall somewhere between community care standards, building codes and = the Health Act. The B.C. Camping Association is a private organization of between 60-70 member camps. The Association sets standards and does regular checks on members fo ensure that the standards are kept. hey publish a guide to member camps and you can get a free copy by sending a self-ad- dressed stamped envelope to: B.C. Camping Association, c/o 535 East Broadway, Vancouver VST 1X4. The brochure also outlines the standards maintained and gives the parent some guidelines to follow in WRINKLE FREE TRAVEL Portable lroning Board Rolls up into its owncarry case! Cushioned. heat choosing a camp — especial- ty valuable if you're con- sidering a camp ottside the organization. Remember, not all kids are as gung-ho about camp as Twas and 1 wouldn't push any child who didn’t want to go. Sometimes the first camp- ing experience is better done with a familar group — like the Brownie pack, When our eldest daughter went to a privatys camp for the first time, af 12, a close girlfriend went with her — they had a marvellous time —- | think they told everyone they were half-sisters with some wild stories about the divorces in our family, Want to know the worst? f envied those kids!
