ble is, my mail has been so interesting that I’ve
wanted to share it with you.

A few weeks ago | wrote a
column on air travel. To be
honest, ! was prompted by the
fatal crash of an elderly Elec-
tra in Reno and by a recent
failure of an airline to return
its passengers from Hawaii —
costing a lot of travellers a lot
of bucks.

I appreciate a flight atten-
dant taking time to write to
me. From her, I consider this
letter an A-plus and I,
selfishly, want to share it.
DEAR BARBARA: I have
been a flight attendant with
CP Air for 19 years and
wanted to say a big thank you
for your column ‘on travel

safety. If only more of our

passengers had your
“chicken” attitude, our job
would be so much easier.

It always.amazes me how
many people can’t take the
five minutes it takes to watch
our safety demonstrations —
they would rather read the
newspaper. I’m sure it would
be these same people who
would panic in an emergency.

Then there is the business-
man that hates to check his
luggage and expects us to find
**a spot”? for his 30-pound
garment bag, briefcase, hat
and coat.

I recently travelled on an
American airline and had a
good chuckle. In deep drawi,
the F/A started her announce-
ment — ‘“‘Ladies and Gentle-
men, there are 101 ways to
‘“‘make out’', but only eight
ways to make it out of this air-
craft in an emergency. I sug-
gest you lisren!"’

lt might not have been too
professional but it certainly
got everyone’s attention.

That letter made my day.
To take it one step further, |
heard a story about the F/A
who made the announcement
about oxygen masks. When
she came to the ‘place it on
— and breathe deeply”’ bit,
she substituted the word
‘‘navel’’ for nose. Not one
passenger twigged. And, yes,
Jim McKeachie — it’s your
story, but not your airline!

And to my reader — Who
knows? I’ve probably flown
with you many times but
you'd never know. As one
reader put it, ‘‘You’re so
damn ordinary!"

After the reply to the
mother who asked about her
son travelling to Peru was
printed, I received a couple cf
phone cails. The first was
from a man who had spent a
year travelling in South
America, spending six months
teaching English in Brazil. He
introduced himself and said,
“I don’t agree with what
you've written. Do you have
five minutes to talk about it?’’
