Dear Editor: Hang in there, Mr. Vander Zalm. The children need you. Maybe, just maybe, they will finally be able to read, ‘spell, and do mathematics. I was educated in a one- room prairie schoolhouse in which the teacher had to administer to sixty pupils in “eight grades. Every one of us advocating a return to the one-room schoolhouse, but I. am pointing up the fact that present-day teachers are paid very well for what they was given a very good do.- We all know about education. Now, [m not young people who graduate _ ALRT costs well inline Dear Editor: - Surrey Ald. Bab Bose says that a ride on ALRT will cost $16.00 in the late 1980s. He bases this forecast on ‘two assumptions: one, that ALRT to New Westminster will cost $1 billion to build; _Disarming not logical Dear Editor: I cannot help but question the logic of holding a referendum on _ world disarmament. In my opionion it would be folly for the west to disarm, for we can never be sure that other nations will do the same. I suggest that, unfortunately, we must keep abreast of other countries regarding armaments as this would appear to be the only deterrent against aggression from foreign nations — and . not necessarily Russia. Similarly, I feel that capital punishment is_ the only. deterrent against murder. Perhaps a referendum on capital would: be more and, two, that there will be 6 million tickets issued an- nually. Let’s try it again. Assuming that ALRT’s capital cost is $718 million and that the ridership in a full year is 30 million, as the GVRD and B.C. Transit economists tell us; then the cost per ride works out to $2.40! “That's not bad, especially in the late 1980s. Remember, a bus ride today costs $2.25. Adult fares are 75 cents. The rest .is subsidy now. So ALRT costs per passenger will be as good or better than that of our buses a few short years from now. Hon. Jack Davis, MLA. North Vancouver-Seymour State killing business? Dear Editor: It does seem strange. North Vancouver City council recently blocked our rights to vote our opinions about world wide nuclear incineration. This, it seemed, was beyond their jurisdiction. Now this same august body, speaking with our voice be it noted, has - decided to urge the return of the noose upon our féderal - are more likely to be murdered than annihilated by.a nuclear bomb NOW!
