the five B.C. school districts
which pay Victoria more
than they get back for their
Basic Education Program.

The difference is used by
‘the Education Ministry to
fund school districts in the
Interior whose tax base is
insufficienet to cover BEP
costs.

Monday's” resolution
means West Van will seek to
become an independent
schools organization similar,
for example, to the
province's Catholic schools.

West Van would raise the
taxes to pay its own way
entirely — without any
bookkeeping exchanges with
Victoria and, therefore, with
no further payments to other
school districts.

Owing to an aging
population only about 4,000
households out of a total of
14,700 in West Van School
District presently have
school age children.

There is a controversy going on whether or
not the minimum driving age should be
raised. Recently there haye been some
deaths of teenagers which have prompted
this issue. ,

Today's question is:

“Should the minimum
driving age be raised?”’

I started driving when I
was 16 and I have to
admit that once in a while
I pushed my luck. I think
everybody does on oc-
casion. It is not the age of
the driver that is im-
portant; it is how mature
he is. Raising the
minimum driving age may
do nothing.

will be marked at three
strategic locations by
fireworks - Halloween
fireworks.

Firefighters have been
waiting since October 31 for
a chance to let off the
fireworks and have been
prevented by the weather
each time they've tried.
Halloween night was marked
by torrential floods and then
the day they set aside a
couple of weeks later was
ruined by gales

Now they're hoping it will
be third time lucky and are
using their store of fireworks
to turn Saturday
