For nearly 30 years young ° people, bandmasters;. musical directors, parents ; and other interested persons - and groups have been or-'~ chestrated into a _ 150- member band that has been a continuing source of © community pride in North Vancouver. Since the early 1950s, when the North Vancouver Youth Band's first musical director, Arthur Delamont, put the first breath of life into it, hundreds of North Vancouver boys and girls have sounded their way triumphantly through the band’s four training sections. Much of the North Vancouver Youth Band's early success and con- tinvance is due to Arthur Smith. When he was given responsibility in 1952 for the band’s future standards of excellence, Smith had impressive qualifications as concert manager of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Until his death in 1978, Smith's energy and vitality served as critical elements of the band's development. Succeeding Smith was Peter Murray, who had conducted some of Canada’s top service bands as a Canadian Armed _ Forces bandmaster. With musical direction duties becoming increasingly onerous, the band’s board of directors this year decided to split the responsibility between two bandmasters. Joe Dowell, another former Forces conductor, is the musical director. He con- ducts the 60 senior members of the Band, and is assisted by Ron Smith, now following in his late father’s footsteps by working with the less experienced groups. Membership in the senior section of the band is the aim of all players in the carly stages of development. valuable community — assets is the North Van- — or 987-6019 (after 4 p.m.) There's more to it than merely the exhilaration of having reached the top. the senior band is a travelling one.
