A8-Wednesday, November 19, 1980 - North Shore News Rec Centre pub a hot issue May spark public hearing By CAROLE STAFFORD That the proposed pub for the North Vancouver Recreation Centre is stirring some controversy, surprises North Vancouver Djistnct Alderman Jim Ball, who is also chairman of the rec commission. “IT didn't think this would be a contentious issue — but obviously, it is,” Ball told Monday's council meeting, in response to a request from the Silver Harbour Centre for a public hearing on the proposed pub. The Silver Harbour group “strongly oppose’ the granting of a licence to the recreation centre allowing them the right to sell liquor for up to 14 hours a day.” The request was = ac- companied by a petition containing 631. signatures. No reasons for their op- position were given. Alderman Ball said he still thought the pub was a good idea. “It’s not illegal, it’s not immoral — it might be a little bit fattening ... ” He also restated his case that a pub at the rec centre would be a financially sound venture. “Anything that’s a money maker, I'm inclined to be in favor of,” he said. He said profits from the pub would help to offset TRADE-IN YOUR OLD WIG AND RECEIVE $ T gee ON PURCHASE OF EASY CARE WASH & WARE WIGS INCLUDING EVA GABOR & CHRISTIAN DIOR OFFER GOOD UNTIL NOVEMBER 30 o apilano mail a oe ® @ sndtiak Studia, & * Shin ( are * Mahe up Artistry > Destynes Wi. costs of the overall operation of the centre. Ball said the commission had had many requests from groups participating in recreation programs at the centre for sucha facility. But he said he expected most of the input councils would receive would come from those opposed. Alderman John Lakes pointed out that the proposed pub was essentially a recreauon commission decision and suggested the Silver Harbour Centre request the commission to hold a public meeting on the issue. “In that way. all interested parties, both those in favor and those against, can voice their opinion,” he said Silver Harbour addressed their petition to both Distnect and City councils and to the Liquor Control Board of B.C. Ball said the LCB had already granted a hcence to the centre for a pub. But he said he -~would bnng the matter up at a recreation commission meeting Thursday night Council agreed to suggest the Silver Harbour Center direct its request for a public meeting to the recreation commission 980 9419 CHILDREN'S VANCOUVER §f The Place where it all begins... * MANUFACTURERS OF HIGH FASHION ‘FRENCH CUT” 14 OZ.
