A4-Sundavy News. Inne 15. 1980 A6-Sunday News, June 15, 1980 editorial page He NEWS VIEWPOINT Adults needed Last week thousands of Lower Mainiand citizens suffered inconvenience and delays when government employees walked off the job to protest proposed new pension legislation. More of the same is promised if the government refuses to discuss the issue with its unions. Neither side should dependon support from the gefteral public which, as usual, is the only victim in this hamhanded dispute. The government plans to increase its employees’ pension contributions and to limit the extent to which pensions are protected against cost-of-living increases by “indexing”. Otherwise, says the government, its pension funds could go broke at some future date. Victoria may be right in its arithmetic. But it was utterly stupid to an- nounce the changes unilaterally before talking with the unions affected. The unions, for their part, say the pension funds are healthy and claim the government is conning the public on the matter. So they are downing tools to demand that the Socreds be thrown out and replaced by an NDP government. In going to these lengths the government employees are unlikely to arouse much sympathy among the great majority of the population who have no employee pensions at all, let alone indexed ones. Closing down government offices, liquor stores and ferries for hours on end seems a dumb way ol trying to win public backing for their special cause. Both the government and its unions should start behaving like adults and stop em- broiling the rest of us in their squabble. White elephant? Vancouver Mayor Jack Volrich is elated over the acceptance of Vancouver as host to the 1986 world transportation exhibition by the Bureau of International Exhibitions Transpo °86 is expected to bring 13 million visitors here. It's also expected, even at this early stage, to run up a $12 million deficit and we can’t help wondering just a litthe why none of the other 36 member countries of the BIE even wanted it.
