John Bishop Jewellers Ltd.
was Started in 1955 by Mr.
and Mrs. J. Bishop. Mr.
Bishop, a watchmaker for
more than 50 years, 38 of
them on Lower Lonsdale,
and his wife, opened their
first small store at 1540
Lonsdale in 1955 and
enlarged it several times
before moving in March
1979 to their new store at
1598 Lonsdale.

It is a family business,
which now includes the
Bishops’ two sons, Wayne
and Ron, who both helped in
the store from an early age.
Wayne apprenticed in the
manufacture and repair of
jewellery at a large Van-
couver factory, receiving his
certificate in 1967. He also
studied gemology, here and
in Los Angeles, earning his
graduate gemologist diploma
in 1970.

certificate in

studying towards his
gemologist diploma. In addi-
tion, he learned the art of
engraving and has been
working at that specialty for
the last 10 years.

Errol Bates, who joined
the Bishops after their move
to 1562 Lonsdale, is the pro-
duction manager. An expert
jeweller and diamond setter,
he learned his skills in
Hawaii.

The Bishops are proud of
their staff. “I know of no
other store which offers this
knowledge and experience,”
Mr. Bishop says.

Mr. Bishop says that in
these days of rapid
technological change, it is of
the utmost importance to
keep up to date in the detec-
tion of synthetic and treated
gemstones.

He has emphasized this to
his sons who have kept
abreast of the latest
developments by taking ad-
vanced jewellery courses.

praisals, when customers
have merchandise that has
been misrepresented to them
