Douc COLLINS © get this straight DOES ANYTHENG remain to be said about the lan- guage fiasco in Quebec? Yes, because those who should have been swinging clubs studded with nails have been coo- ing and billing like doves. Brian Baloney was finally forced to tap Robert Bourassa, Canada’s very own Hamiet, on the wrist. Without mentioning him by name, of course. Rather, our revered leader sounded like a parson whose best friend had been caught steal- ing from the collection plate. Regrets but no real reproach. There was none of the fire shown when Manitoba looked as if it might dump on bilingualism. On that occasion, Brian cailed on that province to do justice to French- speaking Manitobans. He even rode his horse into Winnipeg to put his fellow Tories straight. As for the small band of “‘dinosaurs”’ in Ottawa who fought the new, anti-Anglo Lan- guages Act, he told them it was his way or the doorway. Then there are the media pundits who have backed bilingualism these many years in the name of decency and national unity. One almost feels sorry for them, so often had they damned those “rednecks and bigots’’ who didn't want French on the cornflake boxes or preferential treatment for Quebecers in the bureaucracy. And Iet us not forget the CBC, with its two-hour specials about ‘how bilingualism is the wave of the future and how all men of good will love it. into this swamp of false hap- piness leaps M. Bourassa, telling the rest of the country it can go and get stuffed and that it can take its bilingualism and eat it. Quebec will go its own way. Vivre le Quebec litre. Hate to say ‘‘! told you so.*’ But I did. And didn’t f also tell you that what was going on in Quebec was language fascism? Or, as we may now call it, indoor-outdoor democracy! Did 1 mention the CBC? Well, sometimes it is right. The very morning after M. Bourassa drop- ped his little bomb a French fem was on the air from Montreal teil- ing us that the anglos in Quebec have their place. But it is ‘*a cir- cumscribed place.’* Exactly. English is OK, she might have added, provided it is kept under the counter. In the meantime, the French mob was burning the Canadian flag in honor of the French Fact. None of our biggies got excited about that, naturally. it was all they could do to look thoughtful. I too was thoughtful. I was thinking about how Quebcc likes our bucks but not our flags. Ii us- ed to be the Union Jack that they burned. Now it’s the Maple Leaf. Today Quebec, tomorrow the world? Where are the Pierre Bertons and Allan Fotheringhams and Barbara Frums now? Alas, poor Yorick. Can you imagine what peopie like that would have said if a mob in B.C. had been out in the streets burning flags in honor of the English Fact? But not to worry. No fear of that. The English Fact operates under the motto “We surrender.*' Here's something else that no one has mentioned. Those riots in Quebec in favor of the French Fact were race riols. Language was merely the match that lit the fire. We are all racists at heart, of course. But the French in Quebec are the most racist of all. We can pass as many Language Acts as we like, inspire as many appeasements as we like, and crawl as much as we like. It will make no difference. Quebec first, last and always. Our court fools, in Parliament and out, will go on making excuses for French racism and there will be no peace until Quebec and the rest of the country go their separate ways.
