Nearly two centuries of North Shore life 1792 - Capt. George Vancouver explores North Shore by boat and encounters native people at mouth of Capilano River. 1863 - Start of Pioneer Mills at future Moodyville site. 1882 - First. on-shore electric lights turned on at Moodyville Mill, 1889 - First Capilano Suspension Bridge built. 1891 - Municipality of North Vancouver elects first council with four. wards, stretching. from Horseshoe Bay to Deep Cove, es- tablished. 1893 - Building of Keith Road and first wharf at the foot of Lonsdale. 1898 - Fire destroys much of Lower Lonsdale area. Francis W. Caulfeild falls in love with part of W.Y, coast where he will design a unique, naturally oriented village. 190) - N.V. ferry begins opera- tion. 7 1902 - Hotel North Vancouver goes up next to a pavilion and gardens for public gatherings. Post office is. moved from Moodyville to North Vancouver. First N.Y. schoo] opened at 125 West First St. 1903 - Tug operator Capt. J.H. Cates begins a towing operation at Moodyville. 1905 - Gas street lights and street cars installed on Lonsdale Avenue. Victoria Park and Grand Boulevard cleared. 1906 -N.V. City breaks away from municipality. First newspa- per, The Express, starts up. Elec- tric tramline laid on Lonsdale Avenue to 21st Street. 1909 - Pier built at foot of 17th Street in W.VY. and ferry service begins. . 1910 - First high schoo! at 8th Street and Lonsdale Avenue. Hospital built on East 12th Street. Third Street pushed through In- dian Reserve. 1912 - W.V. District breaks away from N.V. and elects first council. 1915 - Opening of Marine Drive {and new Capilano bridges) com- pletes overland connection on North Shore. 1916 - Moodyville Mil! burns down; settlement demolished in 1927. 1922 - Electricity comes to W.V. $925 - Bridge built at Second Narrows. 1938 - Lions Gate Bridge com- pleted afte: years of public debate, chiefly about the span in- terfering with ships’ masts — not the 60-foot (18-metre) wide swath cut through Stanley Park. 1947 - End of ferry service be- tween W.V, and Vancouver, .1949-Capilano floods Ambleside and Dundarave and knocks out bridge, isolating W.V. for 10 days. 1950 - Opening of Park Royal, first regional shopping centre in Canada. Native stories untold THERE ARE cwo tribes of First Nation people on the North Shore: the Tseil’waututh (Burrard) and the Squamish. . Their heritage, their legends; and the fives their ancestors lived before the first Europeans landed on their shores, make up a story of endless fascina- tion, and one of great value and relevance to the entire community. No record of our history is complete without an account of these two tribes, Yet it is a story that, for now at least, must remain untold. Although an article was written for this paper, both bands requested that we refrain from publishing it. Due to the nature of land claims issues currently before the courts, they felt that any publicity might unwittingly complicate proceedings, The News regrets the obvious gap this leaves in Our Town's recoid of the North Shore’s past. We hope that we can one day share the zomplete story — in friendship, and in a united hope for a more trotting future. .
