Derek and Sally Possee lost their son on the night of May 12, 1992, when a West Vancouver Police drug squad member fired a shot that killed the 22- year-old. Derek and Sally have donated $30,000 .to the North Shore Search and Rescue team, an organization the couple know their son had an interest in. The West Vancouver Foundation will manage the two finds, and also ’. matched. the $5,000 put up by the Possees for the team’s equipment fund. Interest from the $25,000 Danny Possee Memorial Fund will go to the rescue team’s operating budget. The $30,000 left over was also thanks in good part to the Possees’ lawyer, Derek Corrigan, who returned half his fee. Derek Possee found a certain sym- metry in the selection of the North Shore Search and Rescue Team as the beneficiary of the money in the Defence Fund. After all, that money was first given to the Possees by absolute strangers who wanted to help the family in a time of need. In turn, the money will continue to help those in need of help from strangers. The measure of a life is established by the memory of that person. Genetic enginecring, alias biotechnolo- gy, is serious stuff. It has already pro- duced Dolly the sheep, the world’s first cloned animal, and that’s just for starters © So now we learn that soybeans and ‘canola cre often genetically engincered . to make them: herbicide-resistant, enabling farmers to spray higher levels of herbicide without damaging the crops. Insect-resistant potatoes are genetically altered to contain their own pesticide. Corn also has an inséct-killing gene added. Cucumbers may. contain an Arctic char gene to stop them from freezing.
