By 1967, however, the number of children in the popula- tion declined, the Upper Levels Highway made an island of Pemberton Heights, and there was a general decline of interest in the organized church. The congregation moved to a part-time retired minister and a lot of “belt tightening” occurred. The congregation, especially the women’s group (CLEA), through catering and other fund-raising events, the church through difficult times. From 1973 to 1987 the congregation stabi- lized and grew, debts were paid off, and the church ministered to many people. A number of peo- ple have decided to attend the United Church because of its tolerance and progressive stance on many spiritu- al and social issues. Many young families are returning to provide their children with a Christian edu- cation. An article was recently pub- lished in local newspapers ty the well-known American bishop, John S. Spong, entitled “Canada’s UCC: A. Church ready for the 21st In this affirming article, Bishop Spong wrote: “If there is ‘hope for the renewal of Christianity _in the 21st century it will come from traditions like the UCC.” Capilano United Church is part of the vital wider United Church but also has a unique identity. Like a village church, local people still walk to Sunday services. It com- bites the traditional and the new in a fresh and sincere way. Many performances sold out last year!
