Miazda Miata offers
drivers most thrills
for their auto buck

You can still buy a brand new
regular wheelbase, seven-
passenger Caravan/Voyager with
a 3.0-litre V6 engine and
automatic transmission for under
318,600,

The Chrysler vans were updated
in 1991, making them mare com-
fortabic, more reliable and easier
to drive.

Luxury) minivan buyers mas
want to consider the new Nissan
Quest or Mercury Villager.
They're snore contemporary than
the Chrysler vans but more expen-
sive.

The popular sports utility/4x4
class is growing by leaps and
bounds as these off-road vehicles
become fess like trucks and more
like cars,

The inexpensive Suzuki
Sidekick/Geo Tracker and the
Ford Explorer are both great
vehicles, but my vote goes to the
new Jeep Grand Cherckee. It’s a
4x4 you can live with as everyday
iransportation or as a superb
off-road vehicle. The highway
ride in particular is unmatched by
other 4x4’s,

The Grand Cherokee impressed
me with its versatility, something
all sports-utitity vehicles strive
for.

There ain’t too many big cars
lefi, but the best in my opinion is
still the Ford Crown Victoria/
Mercury Grand Marquis.

Priced about the same as many
mid-sized domestic cars, the
rear-wheel-drive Crown Vic offers
a wonderful overhead-cam 4.6-
litre V8 engine, a big-car ride
(remember that?), room for six
passengers (remember that?), and
decent handling for a big car.

Order the optional handling
package if you don’t like ship-like
lean in the corners.

Full-sized cars are likely to
become victims of tighter fuel
economy regulations in the next
ten years, so start planning your
purchase now.

The new Ford Probe GT is my
choice for the best sports coupe.

The exterior and interior styling
is Ford’s but the Probe's
mechanicals are. based on the
Mazda MX-6, which was
redesigned for 1992.

The Probe’s new 2.5-litre V6
engine is very responsive and the
handling of this front-wheel-drive
coupe is absolutely superb. The
Probe GT is priced under $20,000,
a bargain in this class.

The new Honda Prelude would
be my second choice, but it’s
priced higher and has an odd-
looking dashboard.

In the luxury car category the
BMW 535i offers the best com-
bination of comfort and driving
pleasure.

There are Japanese cars that are
quieter and more powerful, and
there are American luxury cars
that are less expensive, but the
535i is the most rewarding in an
overall sense.

It sits down on the road at
cruising speeds and handles with
ease even on bumpy or twisty
roads. Its interior is luxurious
and the exterior is handsome, ex-
cept for those odd tail lights. A
drive in this car is likely to con-
vince you.

Performance enthusiasts must
check out the M5, a limited pro-
duction version of the 5-series.

In the two-seat sports car cate-
gory, cars tike the Nissan 300ZX,
Mazda RX7 and Acura NSX offer
