_ Common inspection
“questions answered

AS MOTORISTS have dealt with the AirCare inspection
stations, many questions have arisen. The provincial
ministry responsible for AirCare tackled some of those
more commonly asked, providing answers for each.

What is AirCare? 11 is an inspec-
tion maintenance program in the
Lower Mainland to reduce vehicle
tailpipe emissions.

Where are the inspection stations?
The North Shore has one station
fovated at 1333 McKeen Ave. in
North Vancouver.

They are also focated in many
other Lower Mainiand
municipalities, incliding two in
Vancouver at 3668 Charles St. and
728 Kent Ave. South.

What are their hours? Ail centres
are open Monday through Satur-
day at 7:30 a.m. and stay open
until all of the cars in their lineup
have been serviced.

Why AirCere? We have to act
now to improve air quality in
British Columbia, especially in
densely populated areas.

The Greater Varcouver
Regional District has targeted an
overall emission reduction of 50%
by the year 2000.

The program has the support of
89% of the residents of the Lower
Mainland. Ministry of Environ-
ment staff say the program wili
reduce emissions considerably.

The program has been tested
for the last two months on over

11,090 vehicles and shown to be a”

success.

Is AirCure the first step ia es plan
to reintroduce vehicle safety in-
spectlons? No. The facilities are
built to ailow safety inspections if
the government chooses to go in
that direction at some later date.

An AirCare facility in Burnaby
will have automated safety inspec-
tion equipment. Drivers can ask to
be inspected there on a voluntary
basis.

The government may aiso
choose to have vehicles safety in-
spected for the collection of data
only. In that case, drivers would
not be compelied to make any
repairs.

AirCare facilities are only in the
Lower Mainland now. Wili they
be expanded beyond this area?
Possibiy, if other areas want it.
The Ministry of Environment,
Lands and Parks monitors air
quality throughout British Col-
umbia and may identify problem
areas.

That ministry would probably
work with the regional districts to
develop options to improve air
