constant: pearls will never go out
of style.

“This fall will be a wonderful
season for pearls,’’ says Nancy
Pier Sindt, fashion editor of Na-
tional Jeweier magazine. **Fash-
ions will be more refined and
more feminine than in seasons
past. Pearls, which have always
had a very feminine quality, will
fit the bill quite nicely.”’

And while the economy con-
tinues its slow pace of recovery,

many women. are discovering’

benefits in the longevity, versatili-
ty, and popularity of cultured
pearl jewelry.

“Cultured pearls should be one
of the staple items of any jewelry
wardrobe,’’ remarks Sindt.
“Pearls offer a big fashion look
for a reasonable price.””

But stretching jewelry dollars as
budgets tighten may be pearls
claim to fame for the season, says
Terry D’Elia, president of the
Cultured Pearl Association of
America.

“With a long cultured pearl
necklace, the need for many dif-
ferent and expensive jewelry items
is almost eliminated,’’ says
D’Elia. ‘‘Unlike certain gold,
silver and diamond designs,
cultured pearls have an almost
chameleon-like quality. They have
the ability to go with anything
from jeans to a T-shirt to a
business suit, to even the most

D’Elia suggests that consumers
planning a cultured pearl purchase
should look for several factors
that determine the value and price
of cultured pearls.

The lustre on a pearl should be
clear and bright enough to reflect
the images of objects near the
pearl. It should be clear, not
muddy in appearance.

The surface of a pearl should be
clean and relativeiy free of cracks,
bumps and holes. An over-abun-
dance of such blemishes will
ultimately shorten the life of the
