The Police Act states that a **complaint must be in writing and must be about the conduct of a municipal officer.”” On the North Shore, there are two tynes of police departments. West Vancouver has a municipal police department and is governed by the Police Act. North Vancouver City and District are policed by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) and complaints about the conduct of members of the RCMP can be submitted to the detach- ment directly by calling 985-1131, or to the RCMP Public Com- plaints Commission at the B.C. and Yukon regional office (666- 7363). To register your written com- plaint about a municipal police officer, you should address it to the chief constable of the police department concerned. HAND You may also complain directly by writing to the Office of the Complaint Commissioner at 405 - 815 Hornby St., Vancouver V6Z 2E6; or by calling 660-2385. The complaint commissioner will monitor the process and en- sure that the Police Act guidelines are followed. Be sure to keep copies of your written complaint or any other correspondence. Once it is determined that there is a complaint, a form must be filled out which will officially degin the procedure.
