wants to know more about
how its residents use bicycles.
The planning report Creating
Our Future: Steps to a More
Livable Region gave the GVRD
the mandate to ‘‘double the
number of bicycle commuters
by 1995 through promoting a
regional cycling network in co-
operation with municipalities,
preparing a regional map of
commuter and recreational
cycling routes, working with
B.C. Transit to facilitate
multi-modal travel and en-
couraging municipalities to

adopt development standards
that accommodate the needs of
cyclists.’”

The Regional Bicycle Task
Force suggests cyclists around
the Lower Mainland get a copy
of Creating a Bicycle Friendly
Livable Region at their bicycie
store, public library, communi-
ty recreation centre, municipal
hall or directly from the GVRD
by calling 432-6329.

By filling out and sending in
the regional bicycle survey by
Aug. 31, cyclists will be eligible
to have their names drawn to
win a BRC mountain bike.

proposed

A NORTH Vancouver City
Council split vote Monday
night left uncertain the fate
of a proposal te open a
neighborhood pub at 107
West Esplanade.

The vote followed submissions
from both proponents and oppo-
nents of the pub plan.

With one member of council
absent, a motion to reject the
Proposal was defeated in 3-3 vote.
But only one councillor spoke in
favor of the new pub.

Ald. Stella Jo Dean said she
supported the proposal because
the site already is a licensed
establishment and because Nick
Vavaris, the owner of the existing
Nick's Place restaurant, would
operate the pub with fewer licens-
ed seats than the restaurant has -—
65 down from 150 — and with an
11 p.m. closure.

She also said that Vavaris
deserved consideration because he
has been a merchant in Lower
Lonsdale since 1972 and has never
had liquor-related problems at Its
restaurant.

Aldermen Rod Clark and Bill
Bell voted against the rejection,
not because they necessarily sup-
port the pub proposal, but
because they said that the
neighborhood residents should be
given an opportunity to have their
say at a public meeting ov public
hearing.

But aldermen John Braithwaite
and Barbara Perrault said area
residents have had their say in the
form of many opposing letters
and phone calls received by city
councillors.

“Do we grant another pub
licence where we aiready have two
within four to six blocks of each
other?”’ asked Braithwaite.

Perrault said ‘that with 13
licensed establishments within a
one-mile radius in Lower Lons-
‘dale, another would be unneces-
sary.

Anti-social behavior and li-
quor-related crimes are prevalent
in the area now, she said.

A decision on whether to pro-
ceed with the pub proposal was
deferred until all members of
council are present.
