16 - Wednesday, October 31, 1990 - North Shore News vi NEWS photo Mike Wakefle| Royals, Eagles clash at Buchanan Bowl ALTHOUGH THE football rivalry between the Hand- sworth Royals and Carson Graham Eagles doesn’t quite compare to the decades-long one of the Chicago Bears and Green Bay Packers, the North Vancouver teams meet this Saturday for their fourth traditional season finale, a prelude to the B.C. high school playoffs. Starting at 1:30 p.m. at Kinsman Park, the Buchanan Bowl will likely decide second place in the Northern Division of the single A Big Sky Conference. And it will definitely benefit the James Buchanan Memorial Schol- arship Fund, in memory of the late North Vancouver high schcol teacher and athletics coach. Buchanan, who taught and coached at Handsworth during the school’s first 10 years, became vice-principal at Carson Graham and later taught at Argyle before his death in 1986, The scholarship will be awarded for the first time next spring to a member of both Handsworth and Carson Graham’s senior footbali teams who plans to continue his studies in university. Coaching staff at Carson Graham and Handsworth will be among the selection committee. This year’s game will see the Eagles attempt to prevent the By Bob Mackin Jr. Contriubuting Writer Royals from a_ hat-trick. Since 1988, Handsworth’s yellow helmet with blue trim has faced beholders of the James Buchanan Memorial Trophy. But Carson Graham hopes to turn it around to reveal the school’s red and white with their first win since the inaugural 1987 game. The first two games were decid- ed by five-point margins — Car- son Graham’s 12-7 win in 1987 and Handsworth’s 20-15 1988 vic- tory. Last year Handsworth took some of the suspense away by finishing on the strong side of a 27-10 final score. Advance tickets are $2 for adults, $1 for students or $1 more at the gate.
