But for the last 20 years, the West Vancouver native has trekked across Canada and south to Mexico. His journeys have included a 10,000-mile cycle across North America, inspirational talks on how to get the most from living, and coaching college and univer- sity basketball and football. Sport was meant to bring people together and yet it’s done so much to separate us.’ Tully calls himself a “jock who likes to write.” For nine years he was a lifeguard at Ambleside Beach, and this summer he beat 692 competitors to take an eighth place win at the Vancouver Twilight Run. “| do it to feel good,"’ he says of sports. “What 1 write about is to push yourself to the limit.’ It was the experience of pushing himself to the limit that first pro- pelled Tully into writing. In 1970 he was the first person to cycle through rain, hail, sleet, burning heat and steep, rugged-terrain across North America. “The scariest part was starting the trip,” he says, “ and as | got ’ into it | thought, what if | were to die? But then I realized that if ! didn’t follow my heart } would die for sure.” Seven years later Tully published a journal of his trip, and now he is working on a movie script of his bicycle tour. The film will be a story based on his life rather than a documentary. His latest venture is a nine- month speaking tour of the West United States, which began in ear- ly September.
