REFORM PARTY CANDIDACY joug Collins ‘deserves an apology’ Dear Editor: Regarding your June 4 letters feceived from Mary-Jane Shaw and Neil Thompson. As I was both the candidate in North Vancouver for the Reform Party of Canada who took a lot of abuse for the party rejection of Doug Collins, and a director of the Reform Par- ty’s executive council, I would like to respond with a few facts of my own, This whole matter of the rejec- tion of Collins by the Reform Par- ty is obviously on many people’s minds. The party leader, Mr. Preston Manning, did in fact over- step his bounds. He violated the party constitution by telling Col- lins he would not sign his nomina- tion papers before he had an ap- proval to do so from the executive council. This probiem is not going to go away mercly by people writing slanted letters or covering up for someone else’s errors. The simple fact is Collins publicly supported the Reform Party’s aims, objec- tives and its platform. All he wanted to do before the end of his days was to have the opportunity to say on the floor of the House of Commons what he had been writ- ing about all these years as a jour- Nalist. He was denied that opportunity by a few. Not by the electorate in Capilano-Howe Sound as it should have been. I am not here to defend Doug Collins, but as far as I am con- cerned he is owed an apology. At his nomination meeting he did, in fact, affirm his position that he was not a racist. He read a passage as it relates to racism from a book on immigration that he himself had written some 10 years earlier. He certainly does not deserve al! this abuse merely because other tidings feel that some cf his com- ments and positions, particularly the subject of immigration, may foster the perception that he’s ex- treme. Heck, I am extreme — I want a better government than the one we've got. This party must never impose its views on any constituency or allow interference from outside the riding. This party will not be guid- ed by pressure groups nor a minor- ity, particularly when they may not even be members. This party will eventually win because its grassroots principles will prevail, giving constituencies a voice in Ottawa. Then he again betrays the very raison d’etre of the Reform Party in an astonishingly dumb plot to go national. And now don’t tell us Doug Christie and his ‘last hope’ Western Canada Concept Party aren’t looking Whatever, Doug Collins says it’s too late, we're doomed. Chances are he’s right again, of course. Our dispossession grows apace with our dissolution. We just have too many Mannings and too few Christies and Collins. Wilfred L.
