WV's Lockiitch brothers
win gymnastics honors

IT WAS evident at the B.C. Gym-
nastic Championships held this
weekend at Simon Fraser Universi-
ty that men’s gymnastics is becom-
ing a stronghold in the province.

Leading the way are two
brothers who have trained out of
the West Vancouver Recreation
Centre for the last 12 years.

Mike Lockitch, 20, won the
men’s senior title with a total of
43.550, the only senior gymnast in
the province.

He was also awarded the Willy
Weiler Trophy for senior gymnast.

Brother Keith Lockitch, 18,
placed second in the junior divi-
sion with a iotal of 39.00, and
came second in all six events.

Both will compete at the
Western Canadian Championships
this weekend in Regina and Cana-
dian Championships in May. Their

coach is former national gymnast.

The Flicka Gym Club in North
Vancon ~* produced medal win-
ners ©. ie championships in-
cludi-; .‘aphne O'Young, who
won the Argo title with a total of
34.416, and Lisa Nakano, 11, who
won the bronze in a close race with
a total of 33.734.

O’Young won the fioor event
with a 9.00 score and came third
on bars with 3.83.

Nakano was third on floor with
8.47. Also in the Argo division,
Kelly Yee was sixth with 33.067
and Theresa Pehar eighth with
32.983.

Pehar won the vault event with
9.00. Amanda Johnson came [2th
with 31.483.

In the Western trial competition,
Nekano, O’ Young and Pehar qual-
ified for teams and Yee was named
as an alternate.

Sarah Baldwin of Flicka, 14,
was seventh in the open division
with 30.13, and won a silver medal
for her vault performance.

In the midget division, Karen
Gill was the all-around silver med-
alist with a total of 31.583. She
came second on beam with 7.85,
on floor with 7.43, and third on
vault with 8.33 and bars with 7.97.

In the new group provincial
*“C’’ under-10, Laura Ilazur was

fifth with 25.45, Sabrina Horak
seventh with 23.900 and Danielle
Tegart ninth with 23.200.
